4 Wheel Drive: 4WD

4 Wheel Steering: 4WS

All Wheel Drive: AWD

2 Wheel Drive: 2WD

Rear Wheel Drive: RWD

Front Wheel Drive: FWD

4WD and AWD are similar but not identical. 4WD has a transfer case that can be 4WD and 2WD on demand. AWD is all the time 4WD with Viscous Couplings. That allows some "bind" on the drive train, like a clutch. The draw back is that fuel mileage suffers since is a constant drag to the engine. Advantage is that you do not need to engage when you need it since is on all the time. Also the manufacturers can play with Torque Splits. Audi Quattro GT (Rally Race Car) in the late 80s, used to run 40%-60% that is 40% Torque on front wheels and 60% torque on rear wheels. So the manufacturer can create different driving characteristics by manipulating the Torque Splits.

4WS is been on and off. Honda made a Prelude back on the mid 80s that was AWD and 4WS. The rear wheels turned the opposite way of the turn on low speed. It gives a more precise cornering and turned the same way as the front ones at higher speeds. So lane changes felt like the car drifted. It took some used to it. GM had 4WD 4WS on a pick up that was sold until 2005 or 06 but due to low sales it was removed from production. People complained about the higher price tag. But it turned on a Dime ! Specially on a Farm that you need to negotiate with cramp spaces and tight spots.

Most cars have the power from the engine supplied to either the front two wheels or the rear two wheels. A 4WD has the power supplied to both the front and rear wheels.
Ja.

4WD implies that you can actively switch the drivetrain from operating either in front wheel drive mode, rear wheel drive mode, or both. AWD is 4 wheel drive that choses which wheels to use by itself. Awd is more sophisticated and usually doesn't involve as much wasted weight as 4WD. Some cars, like Audi, have torsen AWD couplers that engage as necessary to accomodate road conditions to insure proper road grip. This sytem wins races.

4WD means four wheel drive, which means all four wheels are powered rather than the two normally powered wheels. Enviromentally unfriendly, you should not get one unless you are going off road, driving up steep hills or towing regularly. They use more fuel than 2WD (two wheel drive) and are sometimes called Chelsea tractors. They may be taxed higher than 2WD as well

4WD - drive means that ALL wheel push the car - instead of just 2 wheel like in front or rear wheel drive.

It is made for driving in snow or mud. Usually on cars it is for snow but it also works great on dry weather too.

It is nice to have but also be warned that they cost more and have more complexity (cost more to fix).

Good Luck.

It means all 4 wheels drive the car rather than just the 2 at the front or 2 at the back.

I agree with Pedro!!! But it is not a good idea to run different tires due to the difference in sizes, plies, tire pressure etc. I do know people who do this all the time. The important thing is if they are the same size tires. If you get stuck and need the 4 x 4 what other choice do you have. Just don't run it if getting good traction.

as said many times before it means 4 wheel drive..

if the car is rear wheel or front wheel drive.. it means power is going to either the front or rear..

4 wheel is good for off-road terrain, such as hills etc..

you will often find them driving around town , with people behind them who think rough terrain is a puddle in the town.

people are selling them now due to higher taxes etc on them.
serves em right.. no one needs them in town except trades people who carry a lot of things etc..
