The Spanish colonists needed cheap slave labor to grow profitable export crops for sale in Europe. Unlike the aboriginal or indigenous peoples of South America, African slaves could not easily escape and sustain themselves in the 'foreign' lands. They had no place to go, were unable to communicate with the indigenous populations, and they had an ever decreasing cultural identity in each successive generation under slavery.

Indians quickly died, Africans lasted longer, more efficient. Colonists needed them for agriculture development. Their main purpose (colonist's) was to come the this new land and develop a community, and you need agriculture success to have economical success.

It may have been for construction or various types of farming. They thought that using African slaves was more efficient.

most of the natives who toiled in the gold and silver mines had died from European diseases or cruelty,the Spanish wanted to maintain or increase its supply of gold and silver,later when they discovered sugar cane would grow well but was labour intensive they brought more and more[3 million were brought to Brazil alone]
