I forgot which way the arrow on the filter was pointing. What's an easy way to determine which way the airflow is?

The furnace will have two columns of ductwork, a cold air return supplying the furnace with air and the exhaust which will distribute the hot air through ducts to the rest of your house.

When the furnace is on simply put your hand on the ductwork, one will be warm/hot, the other will be cold.

That will tell you the direction of air travel cold to the furnce, warm away.

ps. Don't go opening the furnace and sticking a lighter where there may be some residual gas.....

not the furnace...it's the venting. Open the vents in the lower part of the house, as hot air will rise. Look at windows and door seals for cold leaks coming in. Make sure ur filter (on the furnace) is clean too!
