True, Capt Oliver Hazard Perry built the US Fleet near what is now Erie, Pennsylvania. There is a spit of land that provides shelter and easy access to the lake. They sailed from there and met the British Fleet off the Lake Erie Islands. Here, they fought. Perry's flag ship was sunk, meaning that he had to move his command from a sinking ship to another vessel in the middle of the battle. Very risky. But it was successful and the US Fleet won the battle. Today, the rebuilt USS Niagara can be visited in Erie, Pennsylvania.

True.

It was Admiral Oliver Hazzard Perry, although I dont think he was an admiral at the time. I live about 20 miles West from where that happened and have learned a bit about local history from my dad who knows all sorts of trivia about this area. There is even a monument on the Put-n-Bay Island (largest island within Lake Erie) commemorating his victory.
