Do you just walk in and ask someone to look at your battery, or what??

Either one is OK. They both have the same equipment for checking batteries.

They have a machine on wheels (so they can bring it out to the parking lot). It attaches to the battery with jumper cables and it puts the battery under load (like your starter), and measures the voltage and current. Then it charges the battery and sees if it can hold a charge. It can tell if there is a dead cell, if the battery is getting weak, whether it is charging, etc.

It takes about 15 minutes to fully check out a battery. I have never seen them charge any money for this service (but I'm sure they would appreciate your business if they find a bad/dead battery).

Sometimes the same machine also checks starter motors and alternators.

Go with bigger operation (store). If you end up buying battery from smaller operation and you need service, you have more choices of store to return.

As to checking, they all check using similar equipment.

Good Luck.

P.S. contrary to what the above poster wrote, regular car battery only last about 2 to 3 years (more or less depending on whether you live in extreme climates).

How old is your car that you need a new battery ? It should last for 5-7 years before going weak. A lot of those places will tell you its weak just to charge you to change it.
