I don't think that is a good idea. If you stretch yourself you may cause the baby to come early. The best time to stretch is during labor. Ask the midwife or doctor to try and stretch you while birthing so that you don't tear.
Even though i don't agree with this method - You could make it some sort of a sex game. For men i think it is impossible for them to be "down there" without getting turned on. Use lube and yes it will be uncomfortable. If it is painful stop immediately. Good Luck.

Sorry but I have to disagree with some of these people. I had an episiotomy and I dont think it hurt at all. and some times they ARE necessary. I would rather be cut then tear on my own! At least when they cut you, you are numb!!!!
Your dr should have all of the info you need. But if you do end up getting an episoitomy, dont worry. Its not the end of the world.
P.S. my sons father told me that I felt "tighter" after because they stitch you up:)

I tried this but found it to be way too uncomfortable for me towards the end of the pregnancy. We did use a lube, but I just decided to give up after a few tries. I would just be honest with him and tell him it could reduce the chances of you tearing or needing an episiotomy. I tried the KY jelly that heats up when you rub your hands together so it wouldn't be too cold. Maybe you will have better luck than I did with it.

I'm 22 weeks w/ #2 and tore really bad with 1st (even after having an episiotomy - 2 cuts) and at my next appointment I plan on having my husband come with me and have my doctor explain to both of us how to stretch the area so we can start now. I mentioned it to her earlier and she said we would discuss ways to help me not tear again so I don't know yet the best time to start stretching but I always thought it was later. Don't be embarrassed to tell your fiance to help because he helped you get pregnant in the 1st place. Have your doctor tell him to help too.

It is called prenatal perenial massage. I had a brochure from my childbirth classes. It is to be started 6 weeks before your due date. There might be something about it on the internet. The stretching is somewhat uncomfortable, but it is worth it. The three times I used it, I did not need any stitches. Lubricant probably would be helpful.

okay yes you can continue to do the vaginal exercises and apply warm towel to the vaginal and anal area
and an episiotomies are 99% of the time NOT necessary
a tear is better than getting cut.....and your pushing and birthing position have a lot to do with tearing or not
on your back and semi sitting can set you up for a tear or getting cut
it is best to push squatting, standing, on all fours, side lying or in the water
research these push positions and talk to your doc or midwife
good luck

Find a pregnancy book that explains how to "exercise" the vagina, and share it with your fiance and ask for his help. It may lead to sex (his hands in your vagina...) but that's okay! Take all of the steps you can to avoid an episiotomy - good luck!

An episiotomy hurts like HE**!! You really should just blurt it out when it comes to asking your fiancee. Becuz seriously it hurts. And if you have to actually have one you would regret not asking him. And he would wish you would have asked him if he sees what you would go thru.

you can do exercise by yourself, by simply doing muscular contractions, you just contract and release, its just like contracting any muscle of your body. they recommend doing it about 5 mins a day total (can be 1 min here and there). No need to undress or take special position (although i find it easier sitting). You can do it anywhere, since nobody will notice!

about 5-6 wks prior to your due date start the perineal massage, and yes, use lubricant. it should be uncomfortable, but not painful.
just bring up your concerns about tearing, and ask him if he'd be willing to help you. then tell how. you can get info & diagrams from the internet. or, you can do it yourself (see link)
