portland, maine is nicknamed "the san-francisco of the east" bc only san fran has more restaurants per capita....as far as culture goes seattle or portland oregon probably have portland, maine beat but portland, maine is second to none when it comes to outdoor activities---6000 foot mountains in nearby white mountain national forest, dramatic maine coast with beaches that have 10,000 people or you can find a remote pristine beach all to yourself, 3 major white water rivers(kennebc, dead, and penebscot), sea kayaking with gray/harbor seals, i've seen plenty of surfers around when conditions are right..the city of portland is pretty lively for a small city(70,000) and has lots of young active people, artists, lobster fishermen, college students, etc...but if thats not enough city life for you you can go to boston in less than 2 hours, new york city in about 51/2 hours, and montreal or quebec in about 6 hours--that should get anyone their fix of culture..it has become a very popular relocation place as of late--i've only been here less than a year and always meet new people from somewhere else--come check it out!!!!

Boston, MA and Manchester, NH
The other person mentioned Portland, Maine .. it's nice on the ocean, but that city is just full of bars, and that's mostly it.
