usually you have to be the last day of the month of your lease/last month's rent paid - I would say you would have to pay at least 1/2 month rent of not an entire month - the owner couldn't rent it while you were there cleaning out

Is your lease month to month or a one year lease? If you broke the lease, and this is a one year or five year commercial lease, you could be liable for the rent until the end of the lease period. If this is true, and he reacts in a negative way to your breaking the lease; he might settle with a 30 to 90 day amount of rent.

Did you give notice to the landlord stating your last day? If not, you will continue to owe until you give him/her 30 days notice. If you did give notice and you are now 16 days past your last day you technically owe 16 days of rent. Whether the landlord know or cares about that is another matter.

you are supposed to give the landlord 30 days notice at least. give him notice still if you havent. this gives him time to find someone to replace you. and if you have your things out by the 16 you still own for the 16 days . but be sure he knows you have left and give him the key.
