You may be able to find something surfing the internet about life in 1917 (year they were born) vs. 2007, so they can look back and compare. (My husband actually did that in a slideshow for his great aunt's 90th b-day this year...how much a newspaper cost then and now, how much it cost to go to a movie then and now, etc.) Or maybe old newspapers or magazines from that era.
If they've been married a long time, you could get them an ornament that says "65th Christmas together" or whatever year it is for them.
Or if you can get a pic of them early in their marriage and a recent pic of them, put the pictures in a double frame.

At 90, there are things they probably can't do for themselves anymore - like yard work. Does their garden look like it might need a trim or weeding? You mentioned that they have money, but they may not have a handy person to help around the house.
You may even offer to help them shop for or wrap presents they intend to give. Or ask if they need help baking any family hoilday goodies (if you're good in the kitchen).
My grandparents said that all they really wanted was a nice family photo - so we rounded up all the grandkids and great-grandkids and asked a family friend to take some photos for us. Then we framed them to match the decor of the house. Of course this only works if they are family - you didn't say they were.
You could always give them movie tickets and offer to drive them to dinner and a movie on a night of their choosing. I'm willing to bet that neither of them has good night vision anymore and may avoid evenings out because of it.

At that age, all you are left with is 'memories' ...
Buy them a digital photo frame which can also play mp3 music.
My girl friend gave me a digital photo frame which I can never forget. It had buil-in mp3 player and when I opened the package, she played my best song. The frame had her and mine pic in it. It can always be found on my work desk. I love it ...
See this one is almost similar and very elegant...

Dont forget to buy a Memory card with it. Both should be under $100. Shipping is free if you order from Amazon.
Good luck and Merry Christmas.

Bring in some carolers or a trio of players (you could hire great high school musicians and have them dress up for cheap.) Music is a great gift (if they aren't hard of hearing. ::)
