In what way was the raid a failure?

I mean it seems like an obvious question, I get that, but I just can't seem to find a way to word the answer correctly. I can't just say "The raid was a failure because the freak was hung."

Not only was Brown caught, but the goal of the raid, the obtaining of arms to assist in a slave rebellion also failed. But in a larger sense, it was a success, as it brought more people into the Abolitionist side, which was the hard core of support for Lincoln when the war came, especially when it was going badly for the Union.
