A caterpillar feeds voraciously and then becomes sluggish. it secretes a covering around it and goes to sleep. This is a pupal stage. During this period, some tissues are broken down and new ones are formed. This might take a couple of weeks. When new organs are formed it becomes adult and breaks open the pupal covering and comes out to fly. You call it butterfly.

It is the process called metamorphosis. All insect have 4 basic life stages, egg, larva, pupa, adult. The change from pupa to adult is called metamorphism. Science does not exactly why and how all this occurs.
