Haha I'll be the first to admit that I had no idea what chavs were, and I'm American. I'd say most Americans don't know that word, because I'm pretty sure basically no one says that over here. I suppose it's funny to hear that we don't know the meaning, and then trying to explain it.

Chav or chavel is an old Spanish gypsy word for friend in most recent years it has been resurrected by the traveller population in Chatham Kent. It is used as alright mate. one reason why it is associated with gold clowns ,Thomas Burberry baseball caps ,Reebok Classics, Scrunchies and track suits is because that is the dress code of the young traveller from the Medway towns. Children names Queenie and Lilymae.

Yes, some of us, especially from watching the BBC.....scottish neds, british chavs, irish jakeys, American wiggers, there the same everywhere just with different names.

Because I pay atttention to other cultures, Iv'e come to understand it's the equivalent to our "white trash" or "wigger." But if you come over here and say that, nobody will know what you're talking about.

everywhere has it's own expression for people like that.americans may not use the term chav but they certainly would have appropriate synonyms.in ireland we usually call them "skangers"
