Think in context of the time it was written. Huck wasn't racist by the standards of the time, that's how people thought back then. Twain was simply presenting Huck as people were.

Twain wanted to make the point that the way people were thinking wasn't exactly so good. He uses Huck and Jim to show us that the way people were behaving at the time wasn't so nice. Remember, he probably didn't think we'd be studying his writing 100+ years later, he was making a point for people then.

I agree with Coach. Huck was a representative of the times, his thoughts , beliefs , etc. were the norm for the time.
