will Kobe break Jabar's scoring record? he now has 20,000 points and Jabar has 38000. Kobe is only 29 years old. Jabar played until he was 42.

I think it is possible, especially if he continues to play on a team that does not have a strong second scorer on his team.

Given the type of game Kobe plays, it certainly would not be easy.

Specifically, looking at the raw numbers:

Kobe is ahead of where Jabbar's career scoring total at the same age, because Kobe went directly from High School to the NBA.

Going into this season, Kobe trailed Jabbar by 19,091 points. He basically has half of Jabbar's career total at this point.

Other than the strike season in 1998, Kobe has averaged about 73 games/year. If he plays 75 games/year for the next 5 years, and averages 29 points/game, he would still be about 8,200 points shy of the record...and he'll be about 34 yrs old by that time... his scoring avg. will decrease as he gets older and more so if the Lakers continue to get better players to play with him).

Kobe would then have to play another 4 years (to about age 38) and average 27/game during that time. The odds are probably against that, as he'll become more prone to injury (and need more rest) as he gets older.

During the season in which Jabbar turned 39, he still made first team all-NBA over Olajuwon, Ewing and Parrish ...Kareem averaged 23 pts/game that season. The NBA has never seen anything like Jabbar. I'm not sure Kobe can be that productive when he reaches that age.

Karl Malone might have broken Jabbar's record had he not suffered that injury during his only season with the Lakers.

At this point, I would say the odds are actaully against Kobe breaking the career scoring record. But you never know...he'll have to pile up a lot of points during the next 4-5 years in order to allow himself a cushion to slack off later.

But any injury he suffers will set him back that much further.

I don't think kobe will break the record. it's much easier to stay in the game as a pf or center than it is as a shooting guard. If jordan had not prematurely retired there still was no guarantee that he would have broke the record either. Really i just think enjoy the show. Who cares if Kobe never breaks the record... Karl Malone is second all-time on the scoring list and has no ring to speak of... when its all said and done what will come up first? the fact the malone never won a ring or that he's the second all-time to kareem in points scored... i'm guessing the no rings.

kobe got his rings... just sit back and watch the kid do his thing

no. im a big kobe fan and lakers fan but i doubt that kobe will break jabars scoring record. he's a young player that will be in the league for a while but i pretty sure he's not gonna play 13 more years. still, i hope he does break the record

kobe is quite healthy but SG are not used to be durable. jordan is not the same old **** during his short in wizards so kobe might play for 6-7 seasons at most. not quite a problem for him to reach 30,000 points milestone if he maintains the momentum in the next 6-7 seasons but who knows.

No, Kobe will not. he wants to win a championship, and he can't do it on his own, he needs a second option to take the scoring load off a little.

yes kobre bryant will break the scoring record he averages bout 2,000 points a year an if he plays 13 more years that would be bout 26,000 points plus the 20,000 he already has that is 46,000 points.........however Lebron James will break dat records easily.....Lets go LeBron MVP!!!

He jacks up enough shots to have a chance.

That is his goal: own individual records and gain personal glory over team goals.

Kobe = BALLHOG LOSER
