The best way to celebrate Christmas is in a way that is meaningful and fulfilling to you and, if possible, to your loved ones, too, without overstressing you.

Never expect "the perfect Christmas". There is no perfect anything. Expect, and create, a "good Christmas".

The book Unplug the Christmas Machine is excellent for helping you determine what kind of Christmas is meaningful to you:

I like my Christmas to be a mix of both the sacred and the secular. I go to church on Christmas Eve, and my nondenominational church lights an Advent wreath for the four Sundays of Advent. I love window shopping, and actual shopping. I just came from an office party with all kinds of foods. I love singing Christmas carols while walking down the street, and watching Christmas movies and TV shows at home. This morning I listened to selections from The Nutcracker while showering. I'd like to participate in the Mexican tradition of Las Posadas, but I don't know where to do that in NYC.

The lovely thing about the American Christmas is that we've had so many traditions from so many other cultures poured into us that there is so much to choose from! The sad thing about the American Christmas, of course, is the overcommercialization.

Merry Christmas!
