Speaking for myself, not Yahoo!
Answer lots of questions in a particular subject where you have a lot of knowlege. Be a good Yahoo citizen. Don't break the community guidelines. Give good, accurate answers. Try not to generate complaints. Easiest way to generate complaints is to chat, use inappropriate language, harrass someone, ask something that is nonsense or not-a-question, or give a non-answer.
If you check my profile you'll see I haven't been a member all that long, yet a got TC in radio within a relatively short period of time. 'Course that doesn't count the 40 years I've actually worked in or around radio ;<) So I actually do know the answers to these questions - mostly without research.
I also answer a few questions that grab my attention in other categories and it hasn't hurt my position.
There's a section in the Forums, help and/or FAQs where they give more info about becoming a TC. Set yourself a goal, pick a subject and start answering questions. Most of all, take it seriously, try to give the best answer you can every time. Pick the questions you'll answer carefully to keep your percentages up - go for the ones with the fewest answers and get your answer near the top if possible, be friendly to the asker (maybe use their name) - but DO NOT answer a question immediately, then post it so you can do the research and come back to edit it later - that's a big no-no.
Good Luck, Jens, and Merry Christmas back atcha!

You have to have at least a 10% Best Answers, and you have to answer a lot of questions in a certain category or subcategory. If you answer many questions in another category, you lose the badge for the category in which you earned.
It's very hard to earn and keep these things, especially in questions where there are many answers, and there's a good chance your answer won't be picked, especially if the question goes into voting, and your answer is way down there; they tend to select among the top three, usually the first one. So I wouldn't really worry about being top contributor if I were you.
