When did you start your baby on "big people food?" My 6.5 month old eats baby foods and rice/oatmeal cereals. I am afraid to try other things because of food allergies and choking. When should he start trying real foods and what did you start with?

I would start out with small amounts of things your eating and make sure they are well "mashed" or use a "ricer". Ricer's are food mills that can be found in most stores in the baby bottle area. I would also keep track of the baby's reaction to specific foods so you can see what they like and what they don't as well as any allergy type reactions. Fruits I would keep bland, like bannana's, high acidic foods can upset the tummy or cause colic. I started my son on "big people food" because baby foods just didn't seem to be enough for him at 9 months old. I slowly introduced the foods and didn't have any "picky eater" issues later on.
Good Luck!

Other than that try sweet potatoes squished up, yogurt, corn, peas, bread pieces, cheese.

Just make sure it is soft enough to squish through your fingers and very small pieces. You baby will probably love trying to pick it up themselves. Just go for one at a time. Maybe yogurt for a week, until they get the hang of it and like it. Then go for something else. Babies do not need the change in menu as adults do. Everything is new so they do not get bored. Don't worry or rush. They will still get 100% of the necessary nutrients/vitamins from the breast milk/formula. The rest is for fun and getting them used to new textures, tastes and foods.

The have the things I call finger puffs (Fruit Puffs) at the store in the baby aisle which are easier to chew and dissolve much faster than cheerios, might be worth a try as the out of the house snack. I even broke these into 3 parts (you will see this is hard to do) until i was sure my daughter had it down.

Just give one and watch. Soon your baby will get the hang of it. Be prepared they will gag, just be right there. The texture alone will gag them. It is new.

The key is be patient and persistent. They will reject many of these for the first few times. Just keep offering and one day they will surprise you.

My daughter didn't like the rice cereal and didn't care to much for the babyfood eiether so i just started her on big girl foods at 6 months with just the mashed potatoes and bannanas and then i just cut everything up super small for her and she would just feed herself....She didn't get any teeth until the week of her first b-day she was a pro at gummin all her food.

I know that my bf and I aren't allergenic to anything so I've been giving my son taste of food since he was about 4 months. I know it sounds early but if you knew my son you wouldn't think so; he started crawling at 4-1/2 months and walking at 7-1/2.
I would give him rice, mashed potatoes, a little piece of pork/chicken, just about anything I was eating. Now my son is 9 months and eats food all day, not over weight at all, he only has two bottle a day and loves whole grain rice and eggs.

I think exposing them to food is a good thing and it gets him ready for being a big boy!

I skipped cereal and baby food. My daughter's first foods were mashed banana, mashed avocado, and mashed baked sweet potato.

Here's some good info. on first foods:
