Ok.. here's my suggestion...

first as someone who puts their phone through a lot of abuse. I just go the G'Zone Type-2 from Verizon. This phone is built to military specs. I've tested by droping it numermous times and put in into water (and our Hot tub at 101degrees) with no problems at all. Great phone.

Now... as a dad with kids his age... I would be concerned that he is not being responsible with the phone. If he has been through three phones, then obviously he is not taking care of the phone as he should. Since he isn't paying for these phones, he doesn't have any 'consequences' for his irresponsiblity. I suggest that when you go to get this G'Zone phone, you make him pay for it. If he doesn't learn responsiblity now.. he'll suffer as an adult.

Good luck and I hope this helps!

Make him buy it. Tell him you'll pay for the basic plan as long as he keeps his phone working, but if it breaks and you're under contract, he must buy a new phone or pay the monthly fees. At 16, it may be hard for him to be aware of the phone enough to protect it, but this will help. Get his agreement first, of course. But I think he needs to start paying for his mistakes; that will motivate more care.

If you made him responsible for paying for the phone, do you think he might be a little more careful with it?

Yes, and I'm not trying to be rude, but if he really has problems taking care of his phone, then he isn't mature enough to warrant one.
