If she already knits she probably has the *essentials* that others are suggesting, but let me suggest a few *luxury* essentials that you might consider for her. A retractable tape measure in a case that looks and feels like a sheep or a bee, or one of several other creatures that is now available. A sheep shaped brass needle/knitting gauge. Beaded stitch markers (these are all the rage right now). A scissor keep, where the scissor points are held in a clay protector on a retractable cord and the other end pins to her blouse. A nice knitting tote. A pattern holder stand (similar to a book holder). A magnet board and stand if she knits things from graphs or charts. The board comes with a magnifier magnet with a line to mark her place on the graph. Wooden cable needles. A nice little zip bag to hold all her knitting gadgets. Plastic stitch markers that look like coiless safety pins. A set of Chibi needles to seam her knits with. A bottle of lavendar scented wool wash. A good pair of scissors, embroidery scissors are a good choice. You probably aren't going to find a great yarn at JoAnn's but if she also likes to read, get her one of the Yarn Harlot's books, those are so true and so funny. A knitter's diary (a blank book to keep track of her projects). A subscription to a knitting magazine--buy the current issue to wrap--but Knitters or Interweave Knits, Knit 'N Style are good choices. If she knits on straight needles get her a needle case, even if she knits on circulars, they make cases for them, too, one great organizer is the Circular Solution. They also make an organizer for double points too. A ball winder is a great gift, as is a yarn swift if she gets yarn in old style hanks or skeins. Bypass JoAnn's and head to an office supply store and get her a roll of highlighter tape from 3M, it works like sticky notes, and a set of sticky notes in bright colors to make notes on and keep her place in written patterns. A 1/2" 3 ring binder for her printout or single page patterns (a box of clear page protectors is good to tuck them in to organize them, too.

If she is an experienced knitter, buy her some really lush yarn like alpaca or silk. If she's less fussy, go with an acrylic blend. As far as needles, a basic multi-set is good. But, they can be expensive depending in the set.
It's difficult to give a great answer without knowing how experienced she is or what she prefers. If all fails, get a gift card or at least a gift receipt.
Good Luck!

if you already know what she has then what i used is red heart yarn and the needles that i use are sizes 9 to 5 are the common sizes that i use.
try getting her a variety of yarns like basic acrylic to wool to alpaca, then try some fancy yarns.
with those yarns you need to know what size needle she has and the sizes that she doesnt have, you can get. then get a rolling tote or something that will fit all the yarn and such in. put the yarn inside and get some wrapping paper and wrap the tote and top it with a nice size bow.
that should make her the happiest person on the planet, i know that i would. :D

The size of the needles and type of yarn will always depend on what the pattern calls for. Jo-Anns does have sets of needles that will make a nice gift. Or you can always get her a gift card.
