dex-cool is a newer coolant type and should never turn "brown and gunky". even green prestone doesn't do that unless from contamination. I had a 95 grand am with the same scenerio. turned out to be a head gasket leaking into the coolant. as i used to be a mechanic, i've also seen the same contamination from transmission intercoolers. to do it the easy way, just disconnect the coolant hose from the bottom of the rad and remove all the caps. flush out what you can with a garden hose and do everything back up. then promply refill with a proper coolant mix before water begins to freeze. I hope that this helps and you don't have a more serious problem.

It's best to have a mechanic flush the system when it's as dirty as you say, not just drain and fill with new Dex-cool. Look for specials advertised at quick lubes. $50.00 to $70.00 is about right. Make sure they clean the reservoir tank and supply hose, they get plugged up too.

It is pretty easy to do but it would also be easier for a shop. Since they have a way to dispose of the old. I would say you could get it done for $50-$100 and under an hour.

many cars have different refill proceedures. if you don't refill correctly you could get air trapped in the system. the water won't circulate properly and overheat the engine. there are also environmental laws covering the disposal of antifreeze. you need to take it to a shop for a flush & fill.
