I think he needs to get over it. But he will. Everybody has their hang-ups, and he's probably in his 20's, right? Go easy on him; it's a small thing. He's handling really personal objects in public, and it will take him awhile to learn that no one but he (and maybe his like-thinking buddies) really cares. Kinda like giving an oral book report in grade school. You're scared to death and don't realize nobody else really cares; they're too busy thinking about their own reports, or listening to the content of your report.
His doing it anyway is an act of love for you, as your not asking him to do it, but doing it yourself, would be an act of love for him.
I've seen manually-operated countertop washing machines for sale in gift catalogs. Maybe you could get one of those for your personals. He could do your outer clothing at the laundromat.
My husband has even learned to ask, in a store, where the sanitary napkins are! He felt really funny about it the first few years, though.
But it's a "get used to it" curve.

Tell him to grow up! Then on the way home from the laundromat, he should stop and get you some tampons.
