If all you are concerned about is saving a few dollars here or there, you are being short-sighted. There are more important things in life than cheap shrimp.

And I suppose that it's much better in the big picture for a family with limited expendable funds to spend their money on union made items made here in the USA at much higher prices. Must be nice to live in a glass house.

Sometimes it hard to avoid because labels don't fully disclose things. Even if the item itself has not been made in China, some of the paints and parts have been. Plus the Chinese are making all the toys and items that would normally have been made in the States. If you want an item, you may have to pick one that was made in China. And the government doesn't seem to be the least bit concerned about the recalls so I guess the American consumer is going to have to bite the bullet and accept substandard products made in China.

I asked a question like this and it made me realise that things aren't all that great anywhere. Start researching all the things in our water, food, milk and a multitude of other things approved by the FDA and ADA. Some of the stuff from China that have been recalled, we used in abundance not too long ago. Did you ever hear of lead icicles for the x-mas tree, that's what was used in the 70's here in the US. You will still find homes with lead paint in them. Our water supply is literally being flushed with hormones. Fluoride is proven to be toxic and most grocery stores sell meat that has been treated with nitrates (well known carcinogen) Anyways, do some homework and beware of many things, not just from China.
BTW, even though it's hard, I do my best to stay away from China crap. (fyi- the only toothpaste I could find "MADE in the USA" is Aquafresh and Tom's natural)

I don't think anyone really wants to, but it's very hard to avoid.
Products from China are typically much cheaper than nationally made/grown items because they have access to cheap labor. They have a great advantage in this, and are able to out-compete other suppliers.
If we refuse items from China and shop only national items, your monthly bills would probably triple.

after reading all the reports on the use of lead paints in toys and other items and contaminated foods that are permitted to enter the country without being inspected, I plan on reading ALL labels, avoiding Walmart like the plague and spending my money elsewhere.

Well 1 because it is cheaper 2 because almost everything is and 3 because they are not aware it will break tomorow.

* They might not be aware it's from China, or why it matters.
* Maybe they don't believe the stories, or don't care.
* There might be no alternative; for example, just *try* finding a network patch cord that *isn't* made in China! (And if you succeed, please let people know - I looked for 3 months and couldn't find one.)

It's because they are cheaper than elsewhere. They are infact much cheaper. Now if you don't need something to last for very long, you can buy a chinese product.

b/c they just do...y does this concern you...what they are doing or making over there doesnt bother you...and besides half of the things in your house came from china so why wouldnt you buy stuff made in china
