Last Friday, the exchange rate for Mexican Pesos in San Diego / Tijuana was as follows:
$1 would get you 10.80 pesos
It would cost you 11.05 pesos to buy US$1
The difference is the bank or currency exchange's profit margin.
Therefore:
BUYING 50 pesos would cost you $4.63
SELLING 50 pesos would get you $4.52

Wow Nate... you're really far off. If I went to the bank with 50 pesos and asked for 50 dollars... they would laugh their heads off!!! There is NO WAY 50 pesos is worth 50 dollars. The peso is a much weaker currency than the dollar. The dollar isn't as strong as it once was but it's still a lot better than the peso. You're being too literal with your translations of cent and centavos. Yes a 100 centavos might make up 1 peso but 1 cent does not equal 1 centavo.

The exchange rate today is about 11.50 pesos to the dollar. So one peso is worth about 90 cents. So 50 centavo would be about 45 cents. I assumed by saying "50 cent peso" you meant the centavo. However if this is a 50 peso piece, it is worth about $9. Finding anyone to exchange foreign currency outside the airport is diffcult. And while you can find banks that have foreign exchange, they often to not provide it as a retail service. And it you do find a retail service, they may not want to mess with anything as small as $9, let alone a few dimes.
