How long does it take for a gas water heat to heat up?

If the gas heater has been off for more than 8 hours, how should I wait for the water to get hot?

check the recovery rate on the side of the tank, there should be startup (cold) time . if not wait an hour then try a faucet.

A couple hours should do it. Be glad it ain't an electric model; those accursed things can take freakin' FOREVER to heat up.
