My parents always said he has a key. But have them watch The Santa Clause. In that movie, Santa comes down your heater pipe and a fireplace magically appears in your living room.

I use to tell my kids that I would leave the door unlock for Santa the night before Christmas Eve and that night before Santa became too busy he would stop by because he really liked Oatmeal raisin cookies instead of the chocolate chip cookies everyone else makes. I also told my kids that Santa doesn't drink milk because it gives him gas, he likes beer and that's why he has the belly. So, he stops by mom and dads house first because we are the only ones who knows what Santa Claus really likes....
When the kids would ask me how did I know, I would say because Mrs. Claus would make a list for him before leaving the house, and Santa accidently left it in our house when I was a kid.
What A Big White Lie... but it worked.

Michael C. LaBarbera, a professor of organismal biology and anatomy and geophysical sciences at the University of Chicago, believes that reducing the distance between molecular bonds could do the trick. There's a lot of empty space between the nucleus of an atom and the electrons surrounding it, so moving everything closer together could potentially decrease the size of an object. The mass of the object stays the same, of course. Santa could reduce his size and slip into any vents or under a door if he wanted. You can read more about how Santa and Christmas works at "How Stuff Works". The url is below in my source list.

We live in a cold climate and there was usually snow at Christmas. My husband would shift baking soda onto a old platter we had. He would then take a boot and put it on the platter to transfer the baking powder onto the bottom of the boot. He would make a path from the front door to the tree and then reverse the steps back out. The kids never questioned why the snow didn't melt. He also enjoyed eating the cookies and drinking the milk. He always left a note thanking them for the snack.
Our girls are grown now but they still talk about the boot prints that Santa left. I know that when they have children of their own they will carry this tradition on.
Thanks for making me smile today, I needed it.

This will help especially if your children have seen Lord of the Ring. They call Santa clause that jolly old elf, right? The answer to your question is Elven magic.

I use magic to enter all houses. The chimney thing was just a ruse to make little children sleep in a cold house on Christmas Eve.
Love and greetings,
St. Nicolas aka:
Santa Clause

My mom bought a really old looking key (those fancy kind with the two knobs) to hang on the door outside the house and she said that that key was a special key that santa gave her since we don't have a chimney, She said he said that only he could use it, so we didn't have to worry and that he could get into the house with the key to leave us presents.
