The locksmith has a set of tools that will unlock the door, or 'pick' the lock. These tools are illegal to have unless the person is registered and bonded. A locksmith can probably make you a new key, but that is not how he opens your door. You old key will work fine unless the lock has to be damaged to open it.

Yes, they didn't change the lock just made a copy of the key. It would be the same as if you went to the store and had a second key made for your boyfriend or so that you will have an extra to keep somewhere for when you get locked out :)

Unless he changed the lock on your door completely, your old key should still work. the one he made is just a copy.

Yes but it's never wise to keep the same lock since now a total stranger has a key to your house.

Usually a locksmith will suggest you install a new lock for your own safety. If he/she installs a new lock, it will come with new keys.

Actually you shouldn't have had a new key made! You should have had the old lock rekeyed.
