The true irony of "Christmas is too commercial" is that the same people who mutter it are the ones who stand in line for hours waiting for some poorly made toy that their kids will loose interest in withing a week. Remember Tickle Me Elmo and Furbies? How many kids do you think used either of those for more then a month after purchase? So long as people line up en mass to buy this junk, Christmas will continue to get more and more expensive.

"Christmas is too Commercial" is ready to be added to any list of cliches.

This is an interesting thought. When I was a kid, I received several presents that were really cool and trendy. Now the kids still want cool and trendy stuff and boy, is it expensive!!! But it's the times, things cost.
It's funny, now that I have lost one of my parents, and all of my grandparents, several aunts and uncles, I would give all of that stuff back to just have a game of Trivial Pursuit around the table on Christmas Day with them again. Even now, I find with my own kids, I am buying them less and doing more with them the last few years. We bought a 3 dollar puzzle last year and spent the evening working on it and laughing, and my kids are pre-teens, not little ones. They enjoyed the time and ask if we can do it again this year. The one memory that stands out are the snacks, hot chocolate and a 3 dollar puzzle. I'm really glad for that. I am hoping to show them that family and friends are way better pursuits.

As an act of civil disobedience I have solved the problem in this way: Christmas is for kids. This reduces the presents I must buy to exactly 3. Everyone else gets a card. This policy also frees up everyone I know; they can take me off their lists, one less thing to think about.

Christmas, origionally having something to do with Jesus.... Christianity and Judaism are all about FREEDOM. I have mostly freed myself from the annual madness which Christmas has become.

I think people have always said it has been too commercialized. But times have changed I agree. I am now thirty and this year ( I work in retail ) our store put up their huge holiday display and Christmas display 2 days BEFORE Halloween! When I was younger stores didn't start decorating until mid November. In August, our craft stores put out their holiday displays. That is a bit crazy.
Also I see how people get so hateful and rude because a store is out of stock of the newest hottest item ( Nintendo WII, Nintendo DS, WebKinz ) and they don't know when it will come in. The spirit of Christmas is not about buying the biggest gift or most expensive gift: to me it is about being with my family and sharing love and togetherness. When people are rude to you about things beyond your control then, yes, it is easy to say Christmas has become commercialized. It is really sad. Same with Easter I see parents getting all these games and game systems for their kids Easter baskets. When I was a kid I got candy, not $400 worth of electronics. Yes toys have changes but it has gotten a bit too out of conrol for me.

Supply and demand and cool catch phrases too. As long as retailers have the supplies, people will always demand them. Hence the "commercialization" of Christmas. It's been commercialized for 3 or 4 decades. It has nothing to do with the changing of the times either, it's just business. It's really up to the people on how they choose to celebrate Christmas.

It's only as commercialized as you allow it to be. Of course the merchants are going to try to entice you to buy from them.....that's business. Make your Christmas celebration your own and do what makes YOU happy. Personally, I make most of my gifts. I've been making things all year long and have quite a stash built up. I do still have to do some actual gift buying, but I don't cave in to the pressures. And I never use credit to finance Christmas.

GEE count how many diamond advertisements you see during a given hour of tv and ask yourself again. It's not about what you are buying its about people not talking about the true meaning about christmas. Christmas is not supposed to be all about presents at all. No one should have to stress over how much money they have to spend on three grandkids or a few friends or whatever. I agree that times change though. However, how often to you think about why we celebrate it?

It would be more accurate to say that society is too commercialized. It seems that everybody must have the best and newest thing that money can buy. The truth is that if everyone suddenly became satisfied with what they have, and decided that there were more important thinngs than material items, our economy would crumble. Our economy is based on us buying things we DON'T NEED.

in my opinion Christmas shouldn't even be about the gifts at all. its stupid that the meaning of Christmas is now all about buying eachother the best item. what happened to everyone just celebrating the holiday together and having dinner. no material items needed. i will admit though i still do buy gifts to not dissapoint others. but i don't think this is a good tradition for this holiday.
