Hands down -- Harry S. Truman. Not what you'd consider a "career politician," Truman came into the presidency after FDR died and led the nation out of WWII by the much talked-about use of the atom bomb on Hiroshima and Nagsaki. Whatever criticism you have for this use, know that FDR was in charge of this project for years and would have probably used it himself if he'd remained alive to do so. It hastened an end to the war with fewer loss of American lives.

Truman also oversaw the instillation of the Marshall Plan to help with the rebuilding of Europe.

Most importantly, he was an honest man who was faithful to his wife and family and himself in the face of political pressures, and he had a sign on his desk saying "The Buck Stops Here" meaning that ultimately, the responsibility was his. When was the last time that you can recall a president who exhibited these qualities without going back to George Washington? Not Bush I or Bush II. Not Nixon. Not Clinton. Not JFK.

To take your question literally, I would say that the US's best president is dead, and has been for over 160 years.

William Henry Harrison died in 1841 after just 30 days in office. If more politicians would follow Harrison's fine example, this world would be a better place.

Abraham Lincoln or George Washington. None of the recent presidents of the last century even compare.
