You didn't mention if he's able to be up and about. If so, ask him what he would like to do more than anything. Sometimes, it can be as simple as visiting a childhood home or town, or a favorite meal. But, one thing that's special is to put together a photo album of his friends and family. Ask some long time friends he hasn't heard from in a while to call on Christmas day. One of the best things you can do for the family name is to talk with him and get information about the family for a family tree and family history. Also, don't act depressed, let this be an uplifting time to share your feelings and allow them to share their feelings if they want to. Use this time to let them know how you feel and things you have appreciated about them in the past.

How sad. Why not ask them if they want something special or if they would like something done for them and try to get it for them or do it for them. If they are bedridden and very weak get something soothing/relaxing like lavender candles or aromatherapy sprays for the room. Soothing music.

God bless them.
