I love the answer above, that God expects us to look after the universe! Talk about a small broom for a big pile of ashes!
We get to be the universe being aware of itself for as long as we last. Actually, each of us gets that privilege and that burden. We get to witness the babies tossed into the air and caught on the ends of soldier's bayonets. We get to experience the joy of a sunset with someone we love. We get to see the unthinkable ugliness and the wonderful beauty. All of this contained in the skull of an individual human being. I'm not saying that what we experience is not real, only the awareness is contained and confined to a single consiousness. There is no such thing as a collective consciousiness, Dr. Young aside.

Man is trully the measure of all things because there lie in him certain universal principles, notions, concepts, or ideas which are basic to all knowing. These ideas correspond to reality, the real world. Man is abl to grasp the true nature of things.
The true universe is a universe of changeless, pure, eternal ideas. Man can rise above these ideas, can contemplate, and can know these ideas and the universals.

Man role is to make the creation an intelligible object for itself.
Refering to the ideas of Arthur C. Danto from his book What Philosophy Is As knowers and inventors of knowledges Art, science, philosophy, and religion. Our relationship to the world is and must be external to it. Yet while it is true that we exist as objects in the world without knowers the world would never be an object for itself. Man is both witness and participate in the creation's great adventure.
Philosopher Stanley Rosen said: The task of philosophy is to preserve the delicate balance between man and the cosmos.

No one knows, but it is the man's choice to play the role they want; but I think its role is to destroy and harm the world around him.
