I'm a beginning French student, 9th grade, first year. I have a 85% average right now and its driving me crazy because in all my other classes I have A's. I am also enrolled in a highly rigorous accelerated high school and I have midterms in three days. Can someone please tell me how to study for this and what exactly people make the most mistakes on so I can concentrate on that.

Elaine P gave some good advice. First year French is really hard because you learn a lot of stuff without gaining a deep understanding of it. Some more things: There might be questions about French culture or geography. If you're given a French/English dictionary try to use it sparingly. (It takes a lot of time to look up a ton of words.) If you do look up words, look them up backwards to make sure you get the right words. (example: If you look up mall expecting a shopping center--un centre commercial/un centre d'achat--you'll probably end up with a word for a type of hammer.) Make sure you use des (the plural of un/une). Even though "some" is optional in English, you must put des in French.

These are the most important problems to look out for:

1) Verb and adjective agreements. Make sure for verbs that the subjects are singular or plural. For adjectives be careful if the subjects are feminine or masculine and sing. or plural.

2. Verb conjugations. Again look at the subject and decide WHO is doing the action before you write anything.

3) Irregular verbs. Memorize these until you're blue in the face, especially avoir and etre.

4) Accent marks.

5) I don't know if you've studied different verb tenses yet, but if you have, be sure you know when to use them.

Good luck and all A's to you.
