If I told you some random stranger flew from Japan to America hid under my bed, mysteriously scared my little children, and snuck around eating my food, would you believe me? Oh, also add that when I look for him, I can never mind him. I just see traces of him or sometimes see it. My family denies that he's there though. Would you still believe me?

Apples and oranges. If you had said you saw a fairy doing these things, more people might tend to believe you. In our scope of knowledge, Japan is a real place, we know where it is, we know what people from there look like, know the physical implications of someone stuffing himself under your bed, etc. Crop circles, on the other hand, as well as other "alien" phenomena, are things we can't readily explain in concrete, easily understandable, and universally recognizable terms. Since we don't know for sure, the subject is open to (sometimes wild) conjecture. So if Japan was as vague as planet Zebulon Prime and we had no idea even if there were inhabitants that visited us in our homes, then the idea of the mysterious unseen Japanese man would more easily correspond to the "alien" sightings.
