Since the beginning of time, people have taken mushrooms, smoked weird things and what not to have "visions". Religious tribes called this "an encounter with the other side", but we know it today as being dilusional.

You generalize way too much. Yes I know republican conservative stoners as well as liberal stoners. Pot doesn't encourage free thought. It has a different affect on each user. It is illegal because the DEA and our government can make a ton of coin off the illegality of the substance.

the following comment is only an overview of why its illegal, also includes info on how we can have a more free US and some other usefull facts about marijuna
Marijuana isnt bad for you. Its only illegal because Harry Anslinger
(head of treasury in 1930s) was having his multibillion industry threatened, so he appointed his nefew as head of dangerous drugs and narcotics, secret meetings were held to try to find a way to make one of the worlds best resources out of the way. Eventually the made a movie called "reefer madness"(look it up on google video[not on youtube]). All it did was tell lies to trick the naive americans into teahing thier children not to, and so on. America has been suffering eversince. in the 1920s it was predicted that all car fuil would be run an hemp, but those greedy bastards had to go and screw up everything for america. if you realy care go to norml.org (gives many facts of benifits of marijuana + pro-legalization of marijuana) if you have any questions or would like to know some helpful info when chosing where you stand you can email me (yahoo, if you scan these please dont delete my comment for this) nirvana270793@yahoo.com
if we ever want to make a natrual resource that was falsly accused of wrong doing we must make our voices heard (norml.org, ect.. email me if you want to know ways to stand for justice, [also sory if you dont care for politics but he can realy help, as he is the only presidential candiday that will talk about the taboo subject, due to fear of not getting elected Ron Paul, you can go to ronpaul2008.com]
Its a plant not an evil drug (also can be used to replace 10-20% of potentialy addictive and costly medications)

It's illegal due the fact that if it were legal the government would have no way of regulating it and they wouldn't make as much money off it as they do now.
"We tend to be afraid of and against what we are ignorant about."
This goes out to Let Em Eat....This liberal works and goes to school full time so your remark that liberals are lazy and lay around is false, just like the crap that is spewed from most repubs pie holes.

Dude. It's illegal because it's a weed that grows everywhere and the government can't figure out how to contain and tax it. The stamp is there, the ability to keep folks from cultivating it and bypassing the tax is the thorn.

I think it is illegal because if it were legal it would put a lot of synthetic drug corps out of business!
And, by the way, I find your reasoning very ridiculous! You don't have to smoke to be aware... and I, for one, don't see any glory in being a liberal stoner!

Yes, actually I have. I went to school with a lot of them.
It doesn't always promote free thought, it also makes you paranoid, as most of my repub friends from school still are.
And as you appear to be as well! I am not sure the pot made the hippies aware of the environment, but shunning the trappings of civilization, they were in nature more often that those of us with jobs.

William Randolph Hearst's newspaper empire fuels a tabloid journalism propaganda campaign against marijuana. Articles with headlines such as Marihuana Makes Fiends of Boys in 30 Days; Hasheesh Goads Users to Blood-Lust create terror of the killer weed from Mexico.
Through his relentless misinformation campaign, Hearst is credited with bringing the word marijuana into the English language. In addition to fueling racist attitudes toward Hispanics, Hearst papers run articles about marijuana-crazed negroes raping white women and playing voodoo-satanic jazz music.
Driven insane by marijuana, these blacks -- according to accounts in Hearst-owned newspapers -- dared to step on white men's shadows, look white people directly in the eye for more than three seconds, and even laugh out loud at white people. For shame!

It is true that anything, anyone and all entities that encourage and welcome free thought is a danger to governments. Particularly Govts like ours that claim to be democracies.
Note that alcohol with it's stupifying effects when consumed in great quantities is actually legal. go figure.

to answer your question, yes i have met republican conservative stoners - there are a lot of them in the country - not too many in the city.
Marijuana "enhances" and "distorts" existing thoughts - turning liberals into "super liberals" - and turning conservatives into "neo-conservatives"

Marriageuana is illegal because it encourages mistaken marriages.
Maruana might be illegal because it causes voters to laugh at their elected representatives when they are making ever so serious speeches.
Encouraging free thought is not the same as encouraging silly thoughts from the half-witted.
