I'm a first time mom and my son is only four weeks old, but he is already smiling and laughing in response to people, and he can roll over onto his left side. is this a normal development? from the day he was born he could hold up his head on his own.

He seems very advanced. My son, who is 3.5 months old now, did the following:
Smiled at about 4 weeks old
Laughed at about 6-7 weeks old
Rolled over to the side: about 2.5 months old
Held head up: About 4 weeks old.. his head was strong before this but I am saying 4 weeks old based on him holding his head up during tummy time.
Found his hands at about 6 weeks old
Grasped objects at about 2 months old
Slept through the night at about 6 weeks old (meaning a full 8 hours)

Sitting up... about 4-5 months old
Crawling... about 6-8 months old

Every baby is different though.. I know of one boy who walked at 7 months. Babies vary in their advancements. Congrats to you on your son doing these things.. enjoy them!

My daughter was the exact same way . Even holding her head up at birth . She is now almost 4 months old ,and rolls over onto her tummy ,and then back to her back , she is starting to talk ,and laughs , and smiles and all . She has been doing most of this since 2 months old. You are just going to have an intelligent child ,and you will need to stimulate him more then most his age. I asked my Dr about my daughter doing these things early ,and she said it was a good sign of development ,and that babies know what they want to do ,and can do ,and theres nothing we can do to stop them . Personally I just treat my daughter like shes a 6 month old .

It all depends on the baby really. My daughter was holding up her head by the time she was a week old, she could stand on her own legs with me just holding her hands by 3 months old, she was able to lay on her tummy and lift her upper body by the time she was also 3 months, she was smiling from the time she came out of the womb and she giggled at about 1 month of age. Some develope faster than others and it is normal.

Every baby is different and does things are different ages! First you sound like a very happy dad! The world needs more like you. :) My baby does that too with the spoon I call it her baby birdy thing. It sounds like she is right on key. If you have any questions about development those are always good to bring up at a ped. appt. Otherwise some babies will start crawling at five months (not most). Crawling is around 8+, walking is sometimes after a first birthday around in there, cruising (holding onto the couch, etc) is around 10+. You could check out the book "the baby book" written by Dr. Sears that has a lot of milestones info in it along with a bunch of other good info. Have fun with your little one. I cannot believe mine is already eight months. :)

every baby develops at their own speed my 1 month old was smiling and rolling over to one side at 2 weeks...he can now roll all the way over and no longer needs his head supported...you shouldnt be worried you should feel blessed...his early development is a great sign of things to come...good luck

It just depends on the child.

My son could hold his head up right away too. Some babies take longer. My son didn't walk until 15 months-- some babies walk as early as 9 months.

Your baby sounds happy and healthy. There is no "normal," really.
