There are a number of different ways to meditate. It depends on what your trying to accomplish with it.

On the most basic level, you sit in a comfortable position with a straight back and chin slightly tucked (so that the indent at the back of the head where the head and neck meet sort of flattens out). Eyes can be open or closed and breathing, which starts off as deep to relax the body, should become slowed, subtle and rhythmic. At the very early stages of meditation, you are either 1) distantly "watching" the content of the mind without following thoughts 2) focussing on a meaningful mental or visual image and/or related terms (prayer, mantra, etc.) to both focus the mind and also have realizations about the object of contemplation, 3) trying to suppress thoughts. The first 2 techniques help you eventually managed to do the 3rd technique.

In western esoteric tradition, meditation also sometimes encompasses guided visualizations where one interacts with achetypes, symbols, and thought-forms (so-called "Inner Plane adept," "Spiritual guides, "etc) arising in the landscape of the visionary mental experience.

One reason to meditate is to focus as well as relax the mind, the other, which sometimes involves more esoteric techniques is to purge the subconscious of its neurotic baggage. Another is in the interest of devotionalism--but all methods basically modify consciousness and ultimately result in transformation of cognitive ability, emotional affect and spiritual disposition. Meditation techniques (and this varies according to technique) may be detrimental to persons who have certain types of emotional or psychological problems.

It takes time and practice for most. There are many different ways and techniques out there. The most basic way to start out is to sit, back strait, head held high, on a comfortable surface. I would recomend a pillow on the floor ( chairs can get uncomfortable). Make sure that you are not going to be disturbed. Turn off the cell phone, the ringer on the home phone and put a Do-Not-Disturb sign on your front door. Now, seat yourself comfertablly and try and relax. Some people like to play soft music of the New Age or Light Classical variety. Picture in your mind an empty box. ( If you have any trouble visualizing, take your time, it will come) Take all your worries and troubles from the day and "SEE" yourself putting them in the box. Now, "SEE" yourself standing on a bridge over a gently flowing stream. The air around you is sweet and the temperature is just the way you like it. ( As I said before this can take time. If you lose the image, don't fret. Just relax and try again, but, don't do it to the piont that you are wearing yourself out.) Now "SEE" yourself throw the box containing your troubles in to the water and watching them float away. I know this can sound silly. But, with practice, it can work. From here, cross the bridge into a sunny medow, where the grass is as soft as wool. Here, sit down and think of nothing. Just take in your surroundings. When you are ready to leave, get up and walk back across the bridge and then open yours when you are ready. If you fall asleep, don't worry. Sometimes that happens. Find some books on the subject, there are about a million out there.

There are two basic forms of meditation. One cosists of being perfectly still until there is no thought process and you are in a state of pure oneness. The second is the various forms of guided meditation. Refer to the site below for more....

If your goal is to "raise your level of consciousness", wake up, there is an excellent technique free streaming online. **possible side effects**: spiritual enlightenment, realizing your friends really aren't, reorganizing your life, facing the truth about yourself, exorcism, becoming physically healthy, light in your eyes, changing political party, new approaches to personal finance, hearing the birds sing.

I try to sit still, and clear my mind of any disturbing thought and try to feel every being and thing around me. When I'm sure I can, I imagine good energy flowing inside me with every breath and the bad energy leaving.
