Obviously I would think the answer would be
The Beatles
The Rolling Stones
Led Zeppelin
Pink Floyd
and
Black Sabbath
Beyond any doubt. Who else has influenced Rock Music more than them from the 1960's to right now? No One.
However if You have a divergent opinion and a good reson why I'd like to hear it.

Yes Rof Anger
Both those bands have a vast and far reaching legacy and lots of influence I agree
And I respect Van Halen and AC/DC but I would call them one notch below the pinnacle
No Herb Alpert & Alabama are surely not Rock
But if that's what floats Your boat more power to Ya

The Doors Hendrix & Nirvan also pretty close to the top
Even though I dislike Nirvana and can't stand Hendrix's singing voice

Sorry Buddy...no Dice
How many bands did you see straight up imitating The Who in the 80's?
Now think about Zeppelin
I totally disagree
Zep was the bigger influence

You put Led Zeppelin over the Who... there is something wrong with that.
For me:
Pink Floyd
The Who
David Bowie
The Doors
and even though I don't particularly like them, The Rolling Stones. I cannot deny that they were important to rock and roll.
And since you say influences, here goes.
My reasons why Led Zeppelin doesn't belong is that they didn't do anything new, their first two albums, which even Zeppelin fans call their best, consist mostly of "covers" of blues musicians, uncredited at that. Once they started writing music, people started liking them less and it was the songs of their first two albums that were and are the most requested.
The Who, on the other hand, arguably invented Rock and Roll as we know it, all bands before were playing sort of a blues style, the Who actually came up with something original that was based on the blues. Not only that, but they then went on to continue being innovative, being the first band to really use synthesizers and even having the first rock opera with Tommy.

1. Chuck Berry - (created the the multi-string soloing style, that influenced all great Guitarists, to follow)
2. The Beatles - (each album was a progression over the previous, although they kind of petered-out with the White album - I still can't decide if it is Brilliant - or just a bunch of drugged-out musicians who can't write anymore - NOTE: Their compositions improved dramatically, afterwards....)
3. The Stones - (You gotta respect their durability; and being the antithesis of The Beatles)
4. The Who - Totally fresh approach, when they started-out - you could also say this about The Kinks, but I think The Who improved which each release, like The Beatles)
5. The Byrds - Broadened the possibilities of Rock, with McQuinn's 12-string.
- NOTE - All of the Bands I chose are for their influence, but I have to mention the extraordinary ability of Hendrix - No one to this day (I believe) had the ability to control his feedback at such a high-volume -- that takes dexterity that I believe no other Guitarist has matched.

Seeing The Who in the 70's would have convinced ya.
Eagles?...Taking nothing away from Pink Floyd or The Stones, isn't one American band deserving?

* Strange as it may seem to some people, I appreciate smittybo20 mentioning The Four Seasons. They may not rank amongst the giants musically, but their contributions to the industry would certainly present a good debate. They survived the Brit Invasion, still own the longest-charting single in history (50 weeks) and sold over 100 million records.
"The Jersey Boys" (the story of The Four Seasons) is presently touring live and for those who crave expanding their American Music history knowledge, this show is a must see. It totally blew me away.

I can't argue with any of your list, but I would like to throw the Velvet Underground into the ring. I think they have had a huge impact on music, at least the stuff I listen to. Also, it's hard to have a conversation like this without the Who and Bob Dylan.
The Stooges to a lesser extent had a lot of influence as well.

Thanks Darth. I agree with you completely about Van Halen and AC/DC. I think they are right up there, but on a second tier (which is not a bad thing at all). Kind of like Nirvana, they had a huge impact on music, but you can't exactly put them on the same level with the Beatles.
Another band that I think was far more influential than they get credit for (at least in a lot of circles) would be Sonic Youth. I think there are a ton of groups that have been very touched by Sonic Youth that don't even realize it. They don't belong on the list we're talking about, but it just came to mind.
