I look under the magnifying glass and see some very small dark grey / black marks on parts of the images (especially the reverse). Does anyone have any information on this?

The spots are caused by problems in the packaging by one reason or another. Best bet is to return them as damaged coins which they are and ask for a replacement. The dots are caused by foreign material getting on the surface of the coins on way or another. They have lost their value before they even have a chance to go up in price.

Try cleaning with some 409 and water with a soft rag. Some times machine residue from the mint will get on these coins. I doubt that the mint would send you something that wasn't cleaned but they make a lot of 'mistake' coins in the billions of coins produced each year.
I think I saw something on the U.S. Mint website about sending in questions by email. Why don't you try to get an answer out of them since they are the most likely to know.
