Look up your state bar association, and ask them to provide a referral.
The problem with going out of your town or county is that the attorney will not be as familiar with the judge or the rules of court as the D.A.
You could also contact the ACLU office in your state and explain your situation to them.
As a final measure, you might want to try The Innocence Project. They probably can't represent your husband, but they can provide a referral:

you are going to need to find someone locally. If you find someone out of the state/ town you live in you will most likely be responsible to pick up their hotel and travel expenses. You should provide more info on the case and where you live because most of the time lawyers specialize in an area (ie. family law, DUI law, homicide, narcotics, etc.)

You need to talk to a lawyer who regularly practices in the court handling your husband's case. If you can get in touch with a lawyer you trust-- maybe one recommended to you by someone you know-- if that lawyer does not handle criminal cases he can probably refer you to a good lawyer who does.

Avoid lawyers who advertise heavily.

Go to a different town to hire a lawyer. You don't mention where you live. That could make a difference on any advice someone would give you.

Where you at? Typically criminal defense attorneys are only authorized to practice law in one state.

You kinda have to lay it on the line here if it's an ugly charge because their are all types of defense attorneys out there. What's the charges?

You need to be more specific....

What state, city, county?

What's the crime?

How certain are you that he DIDN'T do it?

Then you can probably get some good advice.
