if you look up the history of both teams, before they played in NJ, they both played their games in the City of NY. thus the NY is for the City, not the State. all the teams in the NFL represent a city ie. the Buffalo Bills, Baltimore Raven, Miami Dolphins, San Diego Chargers, Dallas Cowboys, etc.

I'd say the state, as neither team plays in new york city. Then again, the jets don't even play in new york state. I dunno, Jersey people love to act like they're from NYC, so maybe the jets are just a Jersey team, but they named it after a city not in their state

neither. they represent new jersey and the meadowlands and thats it. the real team that represenst the whole new york is the buffalo bills since they're the only team in new york. (hmmmmmm thats very interesting)
its like saying the new england patriots represent long island or something
