Think about it - what IS an illusion? It's something that you see that isn't so. A straight straw in a drinking glass looks bent because the LIGHT bends. An illusion.

As such, the whole PURPOSE of a mirror is illusion. If you look in one and see yourself, you don't really think there is another you there. But that is what you see. Something that isn't so. An illusion.

Mirrors are used in many illusions. They are also an illusion in themselves. Since we only see ourselves in mirrors or in film and video, we tend to imagine that our appearance is as shown in the mirror - with left and right reversed. This is such a strong impression that sometiimes people cannot identify themselves in photos unless they are completely and clearly visible. Even the classic self-portaits are made from the mirror image and not corrected to reality as seen by others - it is almost the view from inside the skin, as it were.
Art, Entertainment, Science, Psychiatry - mirrors promote and provide illusion.

Mirrors are very useful in small spaces where they double the size of the space. In restaurants and in hotels use large sized mirrors to create an illusion of space.
