Good question!

I think it's become almost like a brand name... Everyone knows about it, and when they use it and see that it is free and light on resources, they seem to forget the main job of an antivirus and do not consider it's detection and removal rates.

After a poor experience on my brothers PC with AVG (it missed several trojans) I will not be using it again.

Having said all that... AVG does seem to be improving. It's detection rates are getting better and I was shocked to see it got "Advanced" in the retrospective AV-Comparatives.org tests last month.

It's detection rates are much better when used with the AVG Anti-Spyware program too, but that costs for 24/7 real-time protection.

Right now, I will not use it. I might consider using it in a year or so if it's detection rates improve.

I am now using Avira AntiVir PE Premium which I absolutely love and it has excellent detection rates and it is also light on resources.
They also do a "Classic" version which is free, and in my opinion better than AVG.

It's free and easy to use; just has very poor virus detection rate. Most people aren't aware of the low virus detection rate and really AVG protects the average Internet user. It's the people who are on it all the time and are going to dangerous Web sites are going to get infected with a virus AVG cannot cure. Until that happens they will stick with AVG.

After extensively researching all anti-virus products I can say the best anti-virus is Kaspersky, though NOD32 is better for computer experts. Kaspersky is the best all-round anti-virus program. NOD32 runs faster and has less software conflicts but as a consequence the user interface is difficult to use.

Because that report that your referring to is paid for and published by the competition. And their Anti Virus solution is worthless.
