The major advantages to living on campus are the ability to be fully integrated into campus life, and the avoidance of non-school distractions at home (no one will interrupt your studying to ask you to set the table or to drive your sister to her practice). Many students find that parts of their personalities come out at school, and others at home. If your family is very different from those at your school, it is especially different to keep changing back and forth from one persona to another and many just never connect on campus if they live at home. In one extreme case, I had a student a few years ago who not only lived at home, but her immigrant father drove her to campus and sat outside the classroom while she was in each class waiting to escort her to the next class. Needless to say, she never got to know anyone and her learning stopped the minute she stepped outside the classroom!

Many studies have shown that students who live on campus do better academically. When you are in a community of people who are all doing the same thing, it is easier to avoid distractions. You will be closer to resources such as the library. You will have the company of people who are taking the same classes, studying for the same tests, writing the same papers. You will make new friends and be more independent. It's a big step in becoming an adult.

Living on campus is great. You are close to class and you are with people your own age. However, staying at home may get you better grades :o) good luck
