You can also use glycerine which is a little cheaper than mineral oil and found near the pharmacy in most drug stores. It also preserves the color.

I don't know much about preservation, or what type of oils to use. But I would think that paraffin oil, or any other clear, non-biologically based oil would work.

Mineral oil just seems to me like it would work well for what you are looking for.

Mineral oil is correct. You need to avoid vegetable oils, which will go rancid over time.
