at the moment I believe my RAM is 184 (odd) pin RAM, can I buy 240 pin RAM and will it still work (even though the speeds are the same)?

no. your ram is a SDRAM and your mother board only support this type of RAM buying a 240 pin RAM or DDRAM will be wastefull.

NO....

Trying to put 240 pin into a 184 pin slot amounts to the same as trying to put a square peg into a round hole.

IT JUST WON'T FIT.... so don't buy it.

All that will fit is 184 pin RAM !!! Nothing more - nothing less.

Also make sure your PC will handle more RAM than what you currently have. RAM slots have a finite capacity. So for example if your PC will handle 512 M in each slot max and you put a 1G stick in the slot it simply won't be recognized by the computer. You need to check your motherboard manual or contact "support" at the PC manufacturers web site.

Hope this helps.
