It is illegal. The teacher works for the University, and the University owns the teacher's work (most likely) under contract with the teacher. It's a violation of intellectual property rights.

I do not think it is legal to videotape a teacher regardless of what kind of school it is... I know how I would feel is I was in college and payed all this money to go there, and some one videotaped the class teacher and all, and that person posted the class on the internet, I know one thing, I would be pissed because this person put up a lesson on the internet which I had to pay for, and other people are seeing this lesson for free. If I had to pay for college than why should someone be able to go on the net and get free lessons that I payed for? So, no, it is illegal to videotape any class lesson...

I would not allow you to videotape my class because a) it could disrupt class b) students would not be as free with their comments c) legally you would need releases to post on the Internet since the classroom is the private property of the college/university even if it is state supported.

Depends. In certain states it is illegal to tape a party without their knowledge. (Maryland for example). If the University has a specific policy that bans taping of a class, or if the professor has that policy, then they may discipline you in any method they desire, including expulsion.
The University and or Professor can also make copyright claims to any class that is taped, and sue you for violating their copyrights.
So basically, it is not a good idea.

If you made clear to them that you're not allowing you to be videotaped. Then yes, it is illegal.

You have to talk to the professor, as he wrote the course. I doubt many of them will allow you to videotape, but most of the are receptive to audio recording. They're not going to let you put it on the internet.

Why would a teacher care if they were not doing anything wrong? Police officers are taped all the time on the job.

you HAVE to have the teacher's approval first. Unless ofcourse you catch them doing something illegal. My professors at the Univ, would have a cow and sue us if we did any sort of thing..even just record their voice
