i need drivers for display and audio as my laptop uses sis chipset and does anyone know what is preventing an upgrade to 2000pro or xp 2000 also what powers my cmos ram as it will not store time and date etc.

You have a backup battery inside your laptop he same as you would in your desktop. For a Dell it is generally under the keyboard, however you need to check the brand of your laptop and look for replacing a part (like changing a cpu )to find dissassembly links. This will usually show stripping procedure and you clearly look only for the battery. Please note if you dont feel confident with this take it to your local pc shop it shouldnt cost too much.

OK several things are going on here. The drivers are best obtained from the OEM. Get those in hand first. Then do a clean install. Which means what was there will be gone so do a backup. Boot to the install disk by changing the boot device to the CD drive. After the OS is installed then install the needed drivers that XP does not find. As to the CMOS ram it may be powered by the laptop battery.
