because because because.

The library doesn't have all the new books and people need places other than bars to hang out. Coffee and teas are fun to drink while reading a book you don't intend to buy.

Bookstores usually have more of the more recent books and the bestsellers than you will find in a library. Starbucks coffee shops are in bookstores because people like to sip a drink while they read - it is a good business liaison. It probably increases profits for both parties. It could also be that Starbucks and the book stores have some common owners, and so the union.

As a business student whose currently in a business career, I can honestly say it's pure commercialism with a mixture of convenience. Some other business students would say synergy, but I wouldn't take it that far as these two companies aren't actually merging together. They're still separate entities, but they've realized that the consumer who comes to their shop most likely also likes "X" additional product, so why not add it as a benefit to their visit. Kind of like those McDonald's that you find in gasoline stations, or to a loser extent finding a display of batteries conveniently located next to the electronics aisle that you just walked into. It's a beautiful business concept IMO. I personally don't do the whole Starbucks/cappucinno/typing on my laptop while I sip some coffee and read a book thing, but still this type of loose merging is a great concept.

Many people find libraries too restrictive - no talking, no food or drink, etc. It can be hard to concentrate if you are at a school where you know everyone, and people keep coming up to you to talk. The caffeine helps to keep people awake. A lot of the bookstores basically hope that people will come in to study and stay to look through and buy some of their materials, so they arrange to have Starbucks present to lure students there. A lot of schools are now redoing their libraries to offer a coffee shop similar to Starbucks there, so that students will make use of the library for studying.

The library where I live has no proper parking. You have to walk several blocks to get to the library. When you have trouble walking any distance, that creates a problem. Since the Barnes & Noble is in the Mall right behind where I live it is easier to get to and I can read with a good cup of black coffee. Nothing fancy, just good plain no sugar or other junk black coffee. Which is what I drink at home.

Some people prefer the more open/relaxed atmosphere of the book store and feel less stressed studying there. Coffee shops are usually there because people are usually there to buy stuff and after walking around for and hour smelling coffee, they usually want one.
