There were two movies made about the same time. Willard and the other one that had Michael Jackson in it was called Ben. MJ even recorded the theme song "Ben". At the time we thought it strange that a big child star like Michael would play the part of a guy who fell in love with a rat. As it turns out though, that wasn't nearly as strange as Michael's real life loves. Seems he outgrew his affection for rats and started sleeping with monkeys... among other things.

Hi there.
The original film is "Willard", the sequel (featuring the only rat to survive) is "Ben" - and yes, Michael Jackson sang the theme song.
In the original. Willard is a lonely weirdo who has rats for friends, a good rat who is white and a bad rat who is black. To revenge himself for humiliations galore, Willard unleashes his rats on his enemies. in the end the black rat (Ben) leads a mutiny and Willard dies too.
In the sequel, Ben the rat befriends a terminally ill young boy. Much mayhem ensues, before a touching scene at the end where Ben is the sole survivor of a battle and comes back to the boy to be cared for. Altogether now: awwwww...

The original starred Bruce Davidson, the remake starred Crispin Glover (although Bruce Davidson is portrayed as his father in a painting).. and the sequel to the original was Ben..
