3 times less or $3 less?

If 3 times less than
Bob = x
Tim = 3x
x+3x = 7.8
4x = 7.8
x =1.95

If $3 less than
Bob = x - 3
Tim = x
x + x - 3 = 7.8
2x - 3 = 7.8
2x = 10.8
x = 5.4
x - 3 = 2.4

Bob=y

y + y + 3 = 7.8
2y +3 = 7.8
2y = 7.8 - 3
y = 4.8/2
y = 2.4

∴Bob spent $2.4.

if you mean 3cents less, the answer is $3.885

using the formula x +x + 0.03 = 7.80

if you mean $3 less, the answer is $2.40

using the formula x +x +3 = 7.80

where x is what bob spends.

cheers!
