I recently watched a man stand on the edge of the GG bridge hanging on while onlookers tried to persuade him back. It troubles me deeply that people in general desire to take their own lives, but I'm curious to know why the GG Bridge is such a popular suicide destination?

Maybe they know that someone might see them and try to stop them.

How sad for you. I think the bridge is chosen because it is a symbol, possibly of urban pressure. It will draw maximum attention to the suicides problem. And sadly it is so big it will guarantee the end they are wishing for. My daughter was in Paris when someone jumped off the Eiffel Tower and killed another tourist on the ground just ahead of her.A double tragedy At least jumpers off a bridge don't take that risk....unless they hit a boat. What a very sad subject for this time of year. Unfortunately those who are distressed and alone think that other people are having a good time and they are the only ones left out. I wish they could find a friend to talk to.

It's one of the only bridges that high that has a pedestrian walkway. There are also a lot of screwed up people in the Bay Area.

I feel the main reason someone would take their life off the GG or any other popular place is for the attention. They could be hoping that someone would save them. If they are at a well populated place their chances of being saved are much bigger.

Im from Austalia, and people jump from large mostly famous bridges here too....
so its no paticular bridge.

Im guessing its a height thing...and the ones who jump from bridges really are serious about dying, and doing it (the suicide) in public?

I think its just the convenience of it. In San Diego there are suicide counseling signs all over the approaches to the bay bridge. Actually I think there can be legitimate reasons to kill oneself--a horrible hopeless painful incurable disease, for one. There ought to be laws allowing people to end it painlessly and peacefully and in a dignified way, in their own time, not when things have become totally horribly intolerable. Lets show the same mercy to terminally ill people that we do to terminally ill dogs and cats.

It's a great view and you know that for once in your sorry life you will affect people's lives.

Same goes for people committing suicide by throwing themselves under tube trains - except without the view.

I would imagine its because its such a landmark and people who commit suicide generally want to draw attention to themselves. like the final act they do.

i guess they know that's a sure way to end it. I think only one man survived the jump years ago.
